Configuration for Voice over Wi-Fi: 6 Key Tips

January 08, 2025

In today’s modern business environment, Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) and softphones have become indispensable solutions, offering flexibility, mobility, and efficiency. Softphones, in particular, are a cost-effective alternative to traditional desk phones, enabling calls over the Internet from virtually any device.

Benefits of Voice over Wi-Fi

Adopting Voice over Wi-Fi allows businesses to significantly reduce operational costs by leveraging existing Wi-Fi infrastructure for voice communication, eliminating the need for expensive mobile or landline plans. This approach not only maximizes technological resources but also enables employees to stay connected from anywhere with internet access, boosting productivity and enhancing collaboration.

However, ensuring a smooth, high-quality Voice over Wi-Fi experience remains a constant challenge. Poor voice quality can frustrate users and directly impact productivity. As a result, optimizing Wi-Fi networks for this purpose has become a strategic priority for companies aiming to maintain reliable and efficient communication.

6 Tips for Configuring Voice over Wi-Fi

Transmission Power Range (Tx):

Adjusting access points' power levels between 11 and 17 dBm is essential for maintaining uniform coverage and minimizing interference. This range aligns with most client devices' transmission capabilities. While dynamic adjustments can be helpful, setting a fixed and controlled range is recommended for consistent results.

Data Rates:

Configuring minimum basic data rates to 12 Mbps for low-density networks and 24 Mbps for high-density networks helps balance performance and reduce overhead from outdated modulations. This adjustment improves overall efficiency and minimizes potential interference.

Channel Widths:

Selecting 20 MHz channel widths in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands is critical to minimizing co-channel interference (CCI). Although wider channels offer higher capacity, 20 MHz channels ensure a more stable and reliable environment for voice transmission.

Channel Planning:

Proper channel planning is crucial to avoid interference and optimize performance. Use tools like automatic channel selection and Radio Resource Management (RRM) to mitigate conflicts with neighboring networks. Additionally, avoid DFS channels in the 5 GHz band to reduce delays in BSSID detection by client devices.

Layer 2 Roaming:

Ensure voice devices remain within the same Layer 2 network during roaming to avoid interruptions caused by IP or DHCP renewals when transitioning to Layer 3. This ensures uninterrupted voice sessions and a better user experience.

Roaming Configuration:

Implementing standards like 802.11k and 802.11r enhances device roaming by facilitating fast and optimized handoffs. These standards improve network management by providing neighbor reports (802.11k) and ensuring seamless and secure transitions between access points (802.11r).

In any business environment, from small offices to large stadiums, a well-designed Wi-Fi network is essential for ensuring clear and reliable communication. Proper RF design, strategic access point placement, and continuous monitoring are critical factors for an efficient infrastructure.

By following these six tips, businesses can optimize their Wi-Fi networks to deliver exceptional voice quality, uninterrupted mobility, and an enhanced user experience.
